Wakesurfing vs Wakeboarding: What’s the Difference and Which Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions we get from first-timers is: “What’s the difference between wakesurfing and wakeboarding?” They’re both board sports behind a boat, but the experience is completely different. Here’s the breakdown.
What Is Wakeboarding?
Wakeboarding involves being towed directly behind a boat at speeds of around 18–24 mph, with your feet strapped to a board. You hold a rope handle the entire time. The wake from the boat creates a ramp you can jump off to do tricks. It’s high-energy, physically demanding, and has a steeper learning curve — falls at those speeds sting.
What Is Wakesurfing?
Wakesurfing is completely different. The boat travels at 10–12 mph and creates a large, surfable wave behind it. You start with a rope to get up and into the wave, and then — once you’re riding the wave’s energy — you drop the rope entirely and surf hands-free. The speeds are low, the falls are gentle, and most beginners are up within 15–30 minutes.
Key Differences at a Glance
Speed: Wakeboarding runs 18–24 mph. Wakesurfing runs 10–12 mph. Rope: Wakeboarding requires holding the rope the whole time. Wakesurfing starts with a rope, then you drop it. Difficulty: Wakeboarding has a steeper learning curve. Wakesurfing is beginner-friendly. Falls: Wakeboarding falls at high speed can be jarring. Wakesurfing falls are slow and gentle. Boat type: Wakesurfing requires a special inboard boat like our 2025 Moomba Max, which creates the right wave shape.
Which Is Right for You?
If you've never tried a board sport on water, wakesurfing is the clear answer. It's accessible for almost any age or fitness level, groups can share the wave together, and the low-speed environment makes it genuinely relaxing even if you fall a dozen times. Most of our guests are wakesurfing rope-free by the end of their first session. If you're a skilled boarder looking for a high-intensity challenge, wakeboarding might be more your speed — but we exclusively offer wakesurfing at Surf Club ATX because it's the experience that works for everyone.
